The glass object "Church" combines the properties of a sculpture and a functional musical instrument. The acoustic properties of the strings in this object were designed to allow chromatic tuning up to three octaves. Here, the float tempered glass acts as a resonator as the musical strings rest on its edges and transmit the sound vibrations.
The design of the building reflects the mathematical Fibonacci sequence and follows the themes of mathematical order and consistency that are associated with the spiritual aspects of sacred architecture. The shape of the object is reminiscent of the plan of a three-aisled church. No metal fasteners are used in the construction, but only wooden wedges, which refer to traditional wood craftsmanship, especially in Asian countries, but also to the construction of Protestant churches. The transparency of the glass material creates the optical illusion of levitation, emphasising references to spirituality. In the work, one can observe a historical reference to the glass tradition of stained glass, which in the European context was the prerogative of churches and temples to bring light and symbolic truth into the space.
The work is part of the "Fragile" series, which focuses on the creation of objects on the border between sculpture and musical instrument. The main material is plate glass, which always functions as a resonator. The parts of the objects are connected by musical strings that can be played and also serve, in conjunction with tuning pins, as a connecting material. The sculptures in this series arouse a certain doubt and wariness in the viewers due to their balancing structure, which looks very fragile. Another theme of the series is to draw attention to the 'secondary' properties of glass, such as its resonance and flexibility.
